American Style Bronze Field Gun with Carriage

Measuring 33 inches long from muzzle to rear tip and 11 1/2 inches wide at the trunnions, with a bore measuring 2 7/16 inches. The unmarked olive green carriage, with black iron hardware measures approximately 58 inches in length, with a 47 inch width, and a wheel height of approximately 38 inches. The bronze cannon itself is unmarked, and has not been identified. The overall style of the cannon is proper for the light guns of the Mexican-American War and Civil War, especially the Model 1841 6 pounder, though the bore suggests a 2 pound shell, which was only used in one field gun, the Woodruff, which was made of steel, not brass, and issued only in limited numbers as a light weapon for organic issue to cavalry units. The carriage is fitted with front rod hooks, iron bound 12 spoke wheels with brass axle caps, cascable elevation wheel, a hanging front water bucket, and a rope hook on the trail with a length of white cotton, or linen rope wrapped around it. Consignor notes state that the carriage was produced by The Ashe Cannon Works of Georgia, mainly using salvaged and refurbished original wood, and attribute the cannon itself as having been purchased via public collection by a small town in the American South. We have no documentation to support this claim.

ConditionFine, the tube has a green natural aged bronze patina, with the top being smooth and slightly glossy, the underside has the same type of green patina, though it is rougher due to less exposure. Carriage is very fine as professionally custom made, with good paint, and some slight rust on the trunnion pins.
