Extremely Rare Pair of Engraved Dutch Jean Herman Flintlock Cavalry Carbines

A) Jean Herman Flintlock Carbine

Dating to circa 1680-1700, this rare pair of early cavalry carbines have swamped octagon barrels with seven-groove rifling, brass blade front sights, and notch rear sights. The rounded locks have floral scroll engraving with mask elements and "IEAN*HERMAN" signatures. Jan Hermans (sometimes engraved as Jean Herman) is recorded as a Maastricht maker in the late 17th century. The carbines have adjustable double set triggers. The furniture is iron. The forend caps and lock screw washers are horn. The "paddle butt" stocks have sliding wooden patchboxes marked "130" and "131" inside, nicely shaped cheekpieces with scroll carving, shaped flats, and rounded heels and buttplates with long pointed tangs.

ConditionFine with silver-gray patina, distinct engraving, minor pitting, and general age and storage related wear. The stock is also good and has some cracks and repairs, a few minor chips, several dings and scratches, and general moderate wear. Mechanically fine.
