Excellent Civil War Era Sharps New Model 1859 Breech Loading Percussion Rifle with Saber Bayonet

Sharps New Model 1859 Military rifles were manufactured from 1859-1862. The front end of this example features a bayonet lug and guide for a saber bayonet. Iron blade front and Lawrence pattern ladder rear sight mounted on the blued barrel with three barrel bands. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO./HARTFORD CONN." in three lines ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1859" behind it. The matching serial number "39285" is marked on the upper tang and underside of the barrel. This excellent Sharps New Model 1859 rifle with its matching numbered barrel has no military inspection markings, indicating it was likely never issued for military service and remained in storage throughout the Civil War, leading to its high condition. The lock plate is roll-stamped with the Sharps 1852 patent markings and the R.S. Lawrence 1859 patent markings. The frame is fitted with the Lawrence pellet primer. The left side of the frame is stamped with the Sharps two-line patent markings. Casehardened barrel bands, receiver, hammer, trigger guard lever, lower tang, patchbox, and buttplate. Two piece walnut stock with casehardened iron patchbox. Includes a brass handled saber bayonet marked "COLLINS & CO/HARTFORD/1861" at the bottom of the 20 inch blade and a brass ended leather scabbard. Provenance: The Michael Simens Collection; The Greg Lampe Collection

ConditionExcellent, retains 95% original dull blue military finish on the barrel with some scattered very light freckling, the same original dull blue appearance hidden underneath the stock line, and a crisp barrel marking. 80% plus attractive original niter blue finish remains on the breech block (minimal evidence of firing wear around the nipple), primer cover, and screws with some slight age related thinning. 90% vivid original case colors remain on the barrel bands, hammer, lever, and buttplate, with only slight fading and some scattered light freckling. Sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Wood is excellent plus with pleasing original raised grain, some scattered light handling marks and scratches, and distinct edges. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet and scabbard are both fine. This excellent example of an always desirable Sharps New Model 1859 percussion rifle would make a fine addition to any martial firearms collection!
