Shot & ball guns such as this one were once quite popular, giving the user the utility of two guns in one, and the ability to take game from upland birds to dangerous game on the plains of Africa and jungles of India. This gun was manufactured in 1909 per page 127 of Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers Volume One: London". Blued steel barrels with a beaded blade front sight, five folding leaf rear sight on the matted rear quarter rib, "WESTLEY RICHARDS. 178. NEW BOND St. LONDON" and "SUPER MAGNUM Explora" marked on the right and left barrels respectively, rifled chokes, correct period Birmingham proof marks, and bands of engraving at the breeches. The vibrantly casehardened hand detachable droplock action is marked with very attractive simple "WESTLEY RICHARDS." in fine gold inlay on either side. The gun features double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety switch with gold inlaid "SAFE" marking. Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered forend with Deeley latch release, and straight grip stock with blank inscription oval, gold star inlaid in the right side of the stock, and leather covered recoil pad.
