Rare Engraved Hall Fifteen-Shot Percussion Revolving Rifle

Alexander Hall worked in New York City around 1854 to 1873 and manufactured revolving rifles under patent #15,110 of June 10, 1856, referenced on this rifle's cylinder. His distinctive revolving rifles are extremely rare. This is only the second example we have had the pleasure of bringing to auction. The other was very similar but had slightly different engraving. The patent was assigned to Hall and James G. Caldwell and has played a part in Second Amendment lawsuits as an example of American firearms with more than a 10-shot capacity. It has a small brass blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight, scroll engraved cylinder with "Hall's/Repeating Rifle/Patented June 10/1856" inscribed in a panel, additional engraving on the brass frame mainly in the form of coordinating scroll patterns, matching engraved furniture, and engraved German silver stock accents in the shapes of a hunter with a rifle, reposed buck, fish, and spread-wing eagle.

ConditionVery good. The barrel and cylinder are mostly a dark brown patina. The brass and German silver display attractively aged patina. The toe plate is cracked at the rear screw. The markings and engraving are generally crisp throughout, and the rifle exhibits mild wear. The stock is good and has a pinned, pieced repair visible on the upper right corner of the wrist, partial repair at the toe, a filled knot, and mild dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
