Gustav Young Engraved Wesson Firearms Co. Double Barrel Shotgun
Approximately 200 of these high quality shotguns patented by Daniel B. Wesson in December, 1867 are reported to have been built. The patent was assigned to the Wesson Fire Arms Co., an odd company as it the same principals as Smith & Wesson. It is believed that these shotguns were manufactured at the S&W factory and finished nearby. The company only lasted for about four years and only produced around 219 shotguns, which sold for several times more than their competitors, in part due to the precision required in the fitting of the action. Built with blued Damascus steel barrels featuring a single brass bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib, light scroll at the rib extension, no choke constriction, and chambers measured 2 1/2 inches with an extractor. The barrels are fitted to the casehardened bar-in-wood style action which displays extensive broad scroll designs and features rebounding hammers, bushed firing pins, double triggers, and a wedge fastener "monkey tail" toplever reminiscent of Remington's later Model 1874 and 1876. The gun is fitted with a nicely figured and multi-point checkered forend with wedge fastener and straight grip stock with blank inscription oval and engraved steel buttplate. Included is a S&W factory letter stating that the engraving on this gun would have been done by Gustave Young as well as stating that as the gun bears no name, it may have been made under license by Charles Parker of the Parker Brothers, Dexter Wesson, or S&W as the Wesson Firearms Company was dissolved. Stock measurements: 1 3/4 inch drop at comb; 2 5/16 inch drop at heel; 14 3/4 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 4 oz.

British 6 Bore Bemister Marked Doglock Seal Hunting/Punt Gun
Lock marked "BEMISTER" at the center. James Bemister is listed as an active gunmaker out of Christchurch, England between 1823-1843, with his brother Samuel Bemister taking over the business between 1843-1847. This massive doglock gun is of the type that would have been used for commercial seal hunting or large scale market waterfowl hunting in England, Canada, or the United States throughout the 1800s. With the advent of large scale muzzleloading weapons such as this one, also referred to as punt guns, hunters could kill dozens of birds with a single blast. Birmingham proofs stamped at the upper left breech area of the barrel. It is fitted with a full length stock with brass fittings and a wooden ram rod.

Presentation British Brass Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss
This early 19th century blunderbuss features a two-stage barrel that flares to approximately 1 1/4 inches at the muzzle and has an approximately 10 gauge bore towards the breech. The top of the barrel is inscribed: "Presented by the London & Birmingham Railway/Company to John Dew Police Officer as a memorial/Of his services during the Riot at Kilsby April 24th 1837" and is signed "W. PARKER, HOLBORN, LONDON," on the octagonal breech section. London proof marks are on the upper left flat at the breech. The flat beveled lock is signed "W. PARKER" at center and has a frizzen spring roller, sliding safety, and light engraving. The brass mounts are also lightly engraved and include a stylized pineapple finial on the trigger guard. At least one other of these presentation blunderbusses are known. The inscription indicates the blunderbuss was presented to a police officer named John Dew for his involvement in quelling the riot at Kilsby in 1837. The riot occurred when the railway laborers attacked two police officers who had arrested two laborers about to take part in a fight. The crowd was said to be two to three hundred strong, but the officers were able to remove the prisoners. After they did so, the crowd swelled and succeeded in breaking into the station house to free the prisoners and hurling stones at the police as well as at the house of John Lee where the police were lodged. In order to quell the riot, the officers called to the Weedon barracks for soldiers for reinforcements. The soldiers and police succeeded in hauling off the ring leaders of the mob. The laborers worked for the London & Birmingham Railway Company and were engaged in the construction of the Kilsby Tunnel.

Seven Barrel Percussion Volley Gun by Perin Le Page
Gunmaker Louis Perin/Perrin of Poitiers was married to Justine Le Page, daughter of the famed gunmaker Jean Le Page of Paris, and worked in Paris c. 1830-1865. This impressive volley gun clearly draws its basic design to the legendary Nock volley guns of the Napoleonic Wars era. On the civilian marked these are sometimes known as "goose guns" as they were used to hunt fowl. The barrels on this example measure .48 caliber (42 bore) but firing together pack much more punch! There is a silver blade front sight fitted on top of the rib which is signed "PERIN LE PAGE A PARIS" and engraved with foliate motifs. The standing breech is groove and is fitted with a U-notch rear sight. The casehardened lock has "PERIN LE PAGE/A PARIS" signed in an oval panel. The mounts are plain. The figured walnut stock has checkered panels on the forend and the "duckbill" shaped wrist as well as a long sculpted cheekrest on the left. The gun has a fairly short 12 5/8 inch length of pull.

Flintlock Sporting Gun with Highly Figured Stock
This ornate flintlock sporting gun has no identifying maker's marks but has clear influences from the designs published by Claude Simonin who inspired much of European firearms ornamentation in the period. It came from the famous collection of the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar at Schloss Ettersburg. In the catalog "Grossherzoglich sächsische Gewehrsammlung, Schloss Ettersburg" from Galerie Fischer in 1927, Lot 67 notes the decoration and unusual dual vent holes and indicates the gun was from "Italy about 1680" and "must have been considered a great treasure, the wood for the stock alone having been worth a fortune at that time." The barrel has a 36 1/4 inch long sighting rib engraved with a position for a now absent front sight and long band of scrollwork emanating from the hands of a figure engraved at the rear. The breech section of the barrel features a detailed chiseled figure waving a banner, bestial masks, Winged Nike blowing her horn, and a classical bust of a man wearing a laurel crown above banners and lightning bolts suggesting the piece celebrates the victory of a military leader. A similar bust is featured on the trigger guard bow, and a bust of a man in a helmet is on the wrist escutcheon. The lock and mounts also feature extensive chiseling in the form of a variety of other figures, beasts, masks, foliate designs and a castle on the buttplate. The highly figured walnut stock has carved molding. "K.N. 1913" and "1918" is marked in the barrel channel (Karl Necke, Keeper of the Castle), and "1918" is written under the buttplate. The last time this gun was in a public auction was 98 years ago! Provenance: The Collection of the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar at Schloss Ettersburg; The Norman R. Blank Collection

World War II U.S. Marked Stevens Model 620A Slide Action
Manufactured c. 1940-1945. To confuse the issue, most of the later guns were marked 'Model 620'... A much smaller quantity of Model 620As as compared to the Model 520-30 was acquired during World War II. Available records indicate that just over 12,000 Model 620A shotguns of all types were purchased during the war. Serial numbers have been observed in two ranges... The second group... was numbered from just under #17000 to around #33000." Single brass bead front sight, 2 3/4" chambered and standard three line Stevens/Savage address on the left side of the barrel. The left side of the breech and lower left front of the receiver are marked with "P/flaming ordnance bomb", with "MODEL 620" and "U.S." on the left of the receiver. U.S.M.C. Mark 1 Variant Remington 870 Wingmaster Trench Shotgun
Serial number 744017V indicates manufacture sometime in the 1960s during the Vietnam War era, prior to 1968 when the “S” prefix serial numbering commenced. Offered here is a parkerized Remington Model 870 Mark 1 variant trench shotgun featuring the U.S. Marine Corps type bayonet adapter assembly with rifle sight and bayonet lug for use with the included M7 bayonet, the same bayonet used on M16A1 rifles, and the extended magazine tube with 7-round capacity. The Model 870 Mark 1 was the first type of military shotgun to fit the M7 bayonet, whereas all of the military trench shotguns before it fit the M1917 bayonet, and also the first to have a 7-round extended tube. Remington's military records are mostly unreleased, but it is well known that a number of Remington Model 870 shotguns in a variety of configurations were procured by the various branches of the U.S. military during the Vietnam War and after, and have been in service in various forms in security and combat roles throughout Operation Desert Storm of the Gulf War in the 1990s and into the Afghanistan War; with many military 870s known to be absent of U.S. property markings and in both blue and parkerized finishes. Related information on various military Remington Model 870 shotguns can be found on pages 240-260 of "The World's Fighting Shotguns" by Thomas F. Swearingen. A known U.S. Marine Corps contract for 3,231 Remington Model 870 Mark 1 shotguns was in Spring of 1969, which featured the bayonet lug adapter with rifle sights, a 21 inch barrel with modified choke, plain walnut furniture, and parkerized finish, in which page 193 of Bruce Canfield's book “Combat Shotguns” (2007) states, “The exact serial number range for the Mark 1 shotguns is not known and was not reflected in the Remington/USMC contract information.” Rock Island Auction Company has sold some Remington Model 870 Mark 1 trench shotguns in the "S" prefix serial range, and one Remington trials/salesman sample without the serial number prefix (Lot 339, Auction 86). Relevant information and photographs of Model 870 Mark 1 and riot shotguns can be found in Canfield's book (2007) on pages 162-163, 181-184, 191-194, and 218-223, in which page 182 of the book states, "The first significant combat use of the Mark 1 shotgun was reported to have occurred in May 1975 during the Mayaguez crisis when an American ship was captured in international waters by hostile Cambodian forces. U.S. Marines eventually recaptured the ship and participated in combat operations against the Cambodian perpetrators on a nearby island. The M870 Mark 1 reportedly played a large role in these engagements, and the weapon quickly gained a reputation as a reliable and effective combat shotgun." Many of the Mark 1 shotguns later had their front sights removed, and some have been reconfigured with 20 inch barrels, as shown in various official photographs in Canfield’s book. This Model 870 Mark 1 variant has been subsequently arsenal/armorer rebarreled with a “WA” 1980 date code 20 inch barrel assembly with the later type adjustable rear notch sight, and choke measuring modified. Two-line "12 GA. FOR/2 3/4 IN. SHELLS" and the date code marked on the left side of the barrel, with the two-line Remington address on the right. "Remington/744017V" and "Wingmaster/MODEL 870" marked on the left side of the receiver. Serrated walnut forearm and smooth pistol grip stock with a black plastic serrated Remington buttplate. 13 inch length of pull. Includes an olive drab green canvas web sling, and an Imperial M7 bayonet with green plastic M8A1 scabbard.

WWII U.S. Stevens Model 520-30 Trench Shotgun
This is a very fine example of a World War II U.S. contract Stevens Model 520-30 trench shotgun with the bayonet lug adapter and ventilated six-hole handguard. A martial variant of a John Browning designed sporting gun, the 520 trench gun was originally developed in response to a World War I request for new fighting shotguns for the American Expeditionary Force. It made a strong impression on the evaluators but did not make it into the field before the armistice was signed. Seeing potential for the gun on the police market, Stevens kept production going until 1932, and at the outbreak of World War II, the U.S. government bought every 520 that was still in the warehouse. Checked back into the arsenals at the end of the war, many were sent back into the field for the Korean War and Vietnam War. The right of the barrel has the three-line Stevens/Savage company Chicopee Falls address, and the left has the two-line gauge markings. Choke gauges at cylinder. The left of the receiver is stamped "MOD.520-30" ahead of "U.S.", and the correct "P" above a flaming bomb proof is on the right of the barrel at the breech and left front edge of the receiver. The stock and bayonet lug are correctly fitted with sling swivels. Length of pull is 14 inches.

German Luftwaffe Marked J.P. Sauer & Sohn Over/Under Shotgun
Manufactured in February of 1940, this is a rare World War II German Luftwaffe marked J.P. Sauer & Sohn over/under 12 gauge shotgun, with the Luftwaffe eagle stamped on the right side breech area of the upper barrel and also on the right of the buttstock. The amount of these made is unconfirmed, and this shotgun was possibly intended as a gift by Hermann Goering to an officer, ace pilot or high ranking individual of the Luftwaffe. Hermann Goering was known to have rewarded individuals for their loyalty with guns, such as one like this, and hunting trips at his lodge. It may have also been used for trap shooting, which was an obligatory exercise to sharpen the eyes and reflexes of the Luftwaffe fighter pilots. This rare over/under shotgun may be a precursor to the Luftwaffe contract J.P. Sauer & Sohn M30 survival drillings, of which 2,500 were manufactured a year later in 1941. Rock Island Auction Company previously sold a similarly Luftwaffe marked Merkel over/under shotgun (Auction 89, Lot 3366), differing from this J.P. Sauer & Sohn manufactured example. This is the only example of a J.P. Sauer & Sohn manufactured Luftwaffe marked over/under shotgun known to have been sold by Rock Island Auction Company. The barrel assembly beneath the forearm is marked with the matching serial number "294295", the J.P. Sauer & Sohn logo, "12/70m/m" along with an "eagle/N" firing proof, "Suhl" above a logo and "240" (February 1940) date code. Matching serial number "295" marked inside the forend attaching iron. Solid rib barrels with a single front bead. Scalloped action with Kersten cross-bolt, double triggers, and a manual tang safety. The stock and forearm are of finely checkered first grade European walnut, with a hard rubber buttplate. Includes period photographs of Luftwaffe officers and a pilot handling a similar shotgun to the one being offered. Barrel and stock measurements (U/O): chambers marked 2 3/4 inches; bore diameter nine inches from the breech .725/.724 inches; choke constriction .010/.021 inches; minimum wall thickness .029/.034 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 3/8 inch drop at heel; 14 7/16 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 7 oz. Pair of Creative Art Engraved Ivo Fabbri Over/Under Shotguns
Ivo Fabbri began his career in firearms along side one of the most well-known names in the business, Daniele Perazzi. After they split, Perazzi went on to create arguably the world's finest sporting guns, and Fabbri pursued his dream to build the finest guns in the world, with this pair being the embodiment of that goal. Fabbri only builds some 30 guns a year, each is hand crafted from the ground up by some of Italy's finest craftsmen, as such pairs such as this are not commonly available for public sale. Each gun was built with blued barrels featuring a single nickel bead sight on the file cut matted flat solid rib which is inlaid at the breech with a gold "1" or "2", "IVO FABBRI - BRESCIA-" marked on the left of the upper barrel and "VACUUM ARC REMELTING STEEL" on the right, a band of engraving at the breech, 1995 dated Italian proof marks, fixed chokes, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels of each gun are fitted to a gorgeous brush bright finished action which displays absolutely "Majestic" fantasy engraving, bringing to mind many classic works of art from Europe's renaissance. The design consists of beautifully executed floral scroll engraving erupting from the mouth of a reposed griffin on either lockplate with the negative space finely etched creating a rich depth of field and continuing onto the underside which bears the markings "IVO FABBRI/BRESCIA, ITALY" in gold inlay over a Maltese cross in a shield along with a pair of angels emerging from either side of a bouquet in front of the triggerguard. The engraving continues onto the toplever, triggerguard and both tangs, the upper of which is inlaid with a gold "1" or "2", and the lower which bears the serial number inlaid in gold. Both guns are signed "Creative Art" for the world renowned engraving firm started by Italian master engravers Giacomo Fausti, Ugo Talenti, Giovanni Steduto, Valerio Peli, and Armando Piardi. While this gun was masterfully engraved by the artists at Creative Art, this engraving theme has been used by various Italian engravers and makers, with one very similar interpretation of the theme being pictured on page 545 of "Fucili D'Autore" by Nobli. The guns feature a single non-selective trigger and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" indicator. The guns are both fitted with an exceptionally attractive well-figured and multi-point checkered forend with bright finished and engraved forend iron including the push button release which is inlaid with a gold "1" or "2" as well as a round knob pistol grip stock with the initials "ASW" inlaid in gold directly into the wood ahead of the toe and a fully checkered bare butt. Included is lightweight motorcase that houses both guns containing three screwdrivers. This pair is consecutively serial numbered with one another as well as with the following lot in this auction, another fine pair of Fabbri guns. Barrel and stock measurements (U/O): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed and measured at 18.4mm (.724 inches); choke constriction .015/.031 inches; minimum wall thickness .031/.029 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 1 15/16 inch drop at heel; 13 7/8 inch length of pull; cast-off 1/8 inch; weight 7 lbs. 4 oz.

Pair of Creative Art Engraved Ivo Fabbri 20/28 Ga. O/U Shotguns
Ivo Fabbri got his start in firearms along side another of the most highly regarded names in the business, Daniele Perazzi. After the two went their separate ways, Perazzi went on to build what are arguably the world's highest quality sporting guns, while Fabbri pursued his dream to build the finest guns in the world, a goal many would argue that he was able to achieve, with this pair being a shining example to that end. Fabbri only builds some 30 guns per year, each being hand crafted from the ground up by some of Italy's finest craftsmen, as such, pairs such as this do not often come up for sale to the public. Each gun in the set was built with blued steel barrels featuring a single nickel bead sight on the file cut matted flat solid rib which is inlaid at the breech with a gold "1" or "2", "IVO FABBRI - BRESCIA-" marked on the left of the upper barrel and "VACUUM ARC REMELTING STEEL" on the right, a band of engraving at the breech, 1996 dated Italian proof marks on the flats, fixed chokes, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels of each gun are fitted to a an exceptionally attractive brushed finished pinless sidelock action displaying stunning "Majestic" engraving, reminiscent of the classic pieces of the European renaissance. The design shows wonderfully executed floral semi-relief scroll engraving erupting from the mouth of a reposed griffin on either lockplate with the negative space finely etched nearly black creating a rich depth of field and continuing onto the underside which bears the markings "IVO FABBRI/BRESCIA, ITALY" over a Maltese cross in a shield along with a pair of angels emerging from either side of a bouquet in front of the triggerguard. The engraving continues onto the toplever, triggerguard and both tangs, the upper of which is inlaid with a gold "1" or "2" behind the safe latch. Both guns are signed "Creative Art" to the right of the trigger for the world renowned engraving firms started by Italian master engravers Giacomo Fausti, Ugo Talenti, Giovanni Steduto, Valerio Peli, and Armando Piardi. While this gun was masterfully engraved by the artists at Creative Art, this engraving theme has been used by various Italian engravers and makers, with one very similar interpretation of the theme being pictured on page 545 of "Fucili D'Autore" by Nobli. The guns feature a single non-selective trigger and a tang mounted automatic safety. The guns are both fitted with an exceptionally attractive well-figured and finely checkered forend with bright finished and engraved forend iron including the push button release which is inlaid with an engraved "1" or "2" as well as a round knob pistol grip stock with the initial "ASW" inlaid on the toe line and a fully checkered bare butt. Included with each gun is a matching numbered and engraved set of 28 inch 28 gauge barrels numbered with a gold "1" or "2" at the breech and on their respective matching engraved forends. Also included is a factory wood and leather takedown case for each gun along with its extra barrel set. Barrel measurements for the 28 gauge set (U/O): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed and measured 14.0mm (.551 inches); choke constriction .008/.011 inches; minimum wall thickness .028/.028 inches.
