Scarce Whitney-Kennedy Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Manufactured circa 1879-1886. Whitney produced only about 1,000 of these carbines in both small and large frame, with most of the production believed to have been sent to South and Central America. This particular carbine is a large frame variation, and features a blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two-line Whitney address, (reading from the right side), and "44 CAL" at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the two-line patent marking and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. Blue finish with casehardened hammer and lever, saddle ring and stud mounted on the upper left rear of the receiver, full magazine tube and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent steel buttplate with compartment, (cleaning rod not included).

ConditionGood. The barrel has a smooth grayish patina and the magazine tube has a smooth brown patina with streaks of original blue finish. The receiver and lever have been cleaned some time ago and now have a dull silver gray appearance, with some minor pitting on the lever. The buttplate a dark brown with heavy pitting. The wood is fair with a section on the underside of the stock that has been carved on, there is a pieced in repair on the upper left wrist and numerous minor dings, gouges and dents. The forearm has a crude period "WD" carved into the left front and there are some scattered minor dings and scratches. Most of the markings are clear, (the W NE in the address are absent). The action is fine.
